Grammy-nominated violinist Robert McDuffie returns to the Schwartz Center alongside Mike Mills, founding member of rock band R.E.M. They are accompanied by Fifth House Ensemble for “Concerto for Violin, Rock Band and String Orchestra,” an adventurous new violin concerto composed by Mike Mills and embarking on its world premiere tour in 2016. Their Emory program also includes Philip Glass's Symphony No. 3, a piece designed to treat every musician as a soloist.

Artist Bios

Robert McDuffie

Grammy-nominated violinist Robert McDuffie enjoys a dynamic and multi-faceted career. While appearing as soloist with the world's foremost orchestras, he can also be found sharing the stage with Gregg Allman and Chuck Leavell in "Midnight Rider," with actress/playwright Anna Deavere Smith in Martin Luther King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail," or playing Bach for Memphis Jook dancer Li'l Buck. Philip Glass dedicated his Second Violin Concerto, "The American Four Seasons," to Mr. McDuffie.

Mike Mills

Mike Mills was the bassist for R.E.M., arguably the most important and influential American rock band of the post-punk era. Though known primarily as a bass guitarist, backing vocalist, and pianist, Mills's musical repertoire also includes keyboards, guitar, and percussion instruments. He contributed to a majority of the band's musical compositions.

The Chicago-based Fifth House Ensemble is a versatile and dynamic group praised by the New York Times for its “conviction, authority, and finesse.” Having pioneered the art of narrative chamber music with its signature series Black VioletThe Weaver’s Tales, and In Transit, Fifth House’s innovative programs engage audiences through their connective programming and unexpected performance venues.
