Performing without a conductor, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra combines the passion of music with the power of democracy. This group of superlative players strives to bring the intimacy and warmth of a chamber ensemble into the richness and power of a full orchestra. Since its founding in 1972, Orpheus has continued to create extraordinary musical experiences that enrich and empower musicians and audiences alike through collaboration, innovation, and a passion for artistic excellence.

Their Emory program includes a world premiere piece by Emory composer Richard Prior, "a canticle of shadows." Prior's new work draws inspiration from images emenating from the conflict zones of Syria and Eastern Ukraine, the Middle Eastt, and the migrant crisis in Europe.

Dr. Richard Prior

An award-winning conductor and acclaimed composer, Richard Prior has a rich musical family heritage that includes Fred Waggett (a prominent figure in mid twentieth-century British conducting), flautist Albert Waggett (a founding member of the English Opera Group with Benjamin Britten ) and composer/ jazz saxophone legend, Tim Garland. His own musical training began in his native England, where he received degrees from Leeds and Nottingham Universities. He has taught at several universities and colleges in the United States and at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford University where he was the 1997 Visiting Fellow-in-Music.
