Brentano String Quartet Plays with Vijay Iyer at Schwartz Center

Vijay Iyer, composer and pianist

September 18, 2014

The Schwartz Center for Performing Arts at Emory University presents Brentano String Quartet with jazz composer and pianist Vijay Iyer on Friday, October 10 at 8 p.m. as part of the Candler Concert Series.

Since its inception in 1992, Brentano String Quartet has performed around the world to popular and critical acclaim. The London Independent has called its performances ¿passionate, inhibited and spellbinding,¿ while the New York Times extols its ¿luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism.¿ Brentano String Quartet recently concluded a fourteen-year residency at Princeton University and has recently been named Quartet in Residence at Yale University.

The Quartet is comprised of Mark Steinberg (violin), Serena Canin (violin), Misha Amory (viola), and Nina Lee (cello).

Grammy-nominated composer and pianist Vijay Iyer has been named DownBeat Magazine¿s Pianist of the Year (2014), a MacArthur Fellow (2013), and a Doris Duke Performing Artist (2012). In March 2014, Iyer released Mutations, his ¿spectacular debut on the ECM label¿ (ABC Spain), featuring his original music for piano, string quartet, and electronics. His 2012 release, Accelerando, was chosen as jazz album of the year by NPR and the Los Angeles Times.

Brentano String Quartet will perform Mozart¿s String Quartet in B-flat Major, as well as Schubert¿s String Quartet in D Minor, D. 810 (¿Death and the Maiden¿).

Iyer will join the Quartet on piano for his original composition Time, Place Action. Iyer¿s piece puts the spirit of real-time invention in dialogue with the meticulous interpretive art of the string quartet. Throughout the piece, sections are specified only skeletally and are allowed to transform through real-time decision-making and improvisation in performance.

Brentano String Quartet with composer and pianist Vijay Iyer perform in the Emerson Concert Hall of the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts on Friday, October 10 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $45 full price and $36 for qualifying discount category members.
