Tabla virtuoso and international phenomenon Zakir Hussain, considered a contemporary master of the 3,000-year-old tabla tradition, joins forces with 2017 National Endowment for the Arts’ Jazz Master Dave Holland for Crosscurrents, a collaboration that explores the relationship between jazz and Indian classical music. The Crosscurrents tour comes to Emory’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 8 p.m. as part of the 2017-2018 Candler Concert Series.
While Hussain's exciting performances have made him a national treasure in his native India and gained him worldwide fame and accolades, his cutting-edge collaborations are what has marked him as an inventive leader on the world music stage. Holland is a bona fide jazz superstar and was recently hailed by The Boston Globe as “….one of the most sophisticated composers and arrangers in the jazz world.”
Their collaboration demonstrates the countless intersections and shared inspirations between jazz and Indian music. Emory’s Crosscurrents performance will also feature saxophonist Chris Potter, vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, keyboardist Louis Banks, guitarist Sanjay Divecha and drummer Gino Banks.
