ATLANTA (Mar. 26, 2012)—Celebrating a decade of music and dance, Emory’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts announces the season for the 2012-2013 Flora Glenn Candler Concert Series. From the acclaimed Warsaw Philharmonic to the innovative violin of Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR), the series brings outstanding classical, jazz and new music to Atlanta. The Schwartz Center also welcomes Monica Bill Barnes & Company as the season’s special dance event.
Since 2003, the Schwartz Center has hosted hundreds of performances by world-renowned guest artists, as well as talented faculty and students. The Schwartz Center will be celebrating with special 10th anniversary events in February; details coming soon at arts.emory.edu/candler.
2012-2013 Candler Concert Series:
An Evening with Branford Marsalis, jazz quartet, Sep. 21
Renowned saxophonist and Tony Award-nominated composer Branford Marsalis will present an evening of musicianship and spirit, with Joey Calderazzo on piano; Eric Revis, bass; and Justin Faulkner on drums. Video
Gil Shaham, violin, Oct. 4
Gil Shaham combines flawless technique with inimitable warmth and generosity of spirit. In his Emory program, he will explore several of Bach’s sonatas and partitas for solo violin. Audio and Video
Warsaw Philharmonic, orchestra, Nov. 2
Artistic Director Antoni Wit leads the celebrated orchestra, joined by Yulianna Avdeeva, the 2010 first prize winner of the 16th International Frédéric Chopin Competition and the first woman to win the competition in 45 years. Video
Sérgio and Odair Assad, classical and Latin guitar, Nov. 10
Brazilian-born brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad have created a new standard of guitar innovation, ingenuity, and expression. Their repertoire includes original and new music, as well as reworkings of folk, jazz and Latin music. Audio
Yefim Bronfman, piano, Feb. 2
Yefim (“Fima”) Bronfman’s commanding technique and lyrical gifts have won consistent critical acclaim and enthusiastic audiences worldwide for his solo recitals, prestigious orchestral engagements and expanding catalogue of recordings. Video
Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR), violin, Feb. 22
From artist collaborations as diverse as Philip Glass to Lady Gaga, Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) melds his classical music roots with his own cultural references and vibrant musical imagination. DBR will perform with members of the Sphinx Symphony, the unique all-African American and Latino orchestra that comprises top professionals from around the country. Video

Brooklyn Rider, chamber, April 12
The adventurous, genre-defying string quartet Brooklyn Rider combines a wildly eclectic repertoire with a gripping performance style that is attracting legions of fans and drawing critical acclaim from classical, world and rock critics. Video
The Flora Glenn Candler performances, made possible by the Flora Glenn Candler Endowment, are presented in the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts on the Emory University campus (1700 N.
